Surely all those of us posting on these threads can see that there is benefit to winter tyres etc but these do not replace your own driving standards . Yes at the end of the day you as the driver make the difference the aids are just that and should help but only if you are aware in the 1st place of what is happening and how to deal with it .
Agreed, I have not for one minute suggested that winter tyres will make anyone's driving any better or worse. If a person drives like a dick they will continue to drive like that with or without the aids. I bought the car as primarily for comfort and space, not for all the aids that it happens to have.

The last car I had almost no aids except ABS I can count on the fingers of one hand the times it was used, because I leave plenty of space and adjust my driving to the conditions. Last year I was unable to use the car due to several reasons, one of the main ones being the road conditions. I'm fitting winter tyres so I can be mobile and enjoy my weekends in comfort with my wife. Not so I can tool around showing others how great I am.

What's the point having a car that can't be used, for two months of the year.

Ok so I have the fwd version and until today did not have any problems with the winter stuff

Spent the day poottling around in my wifes '97 Defender and did not think anything of the conditions.well you would not in one of those

Jumped into the xc60 tonight to do a 2 mile local trip and nearly put it in the hedge all over the shop. Just very very slippy, traction light working well but little else. Gave zero confidence even on the 17 inch Michelin semis

I know which car I'll be commuting with tomorrow

Default Like any other 2WD vehicle

Hello, my experience of the XC60 2WD in snow is the same as any other wide tired 2WD vehicle. Not good. Snow tyres recommended. I agree with the other comments around 2WD v 4WD, tyres will make the biggest difference but of course 4WD with snow tyres is the best option.

Default A vote for winter tyres

Love my XC60 but it is pants in the snow. I live up a hill (not a steep one) and had to leave the car quarter of a mile away from home and walk home as it just couldn't handle the hill in snow/ice. I thought "winter tyres" were just the latest clever way to get me to part with some cash. I was wrong. Had them fitted last week and the difference is amazing. XC60 now negotiates the hill with no problem. Money well spent I think.

Like seat belts, airbags, radial tyres, Xenon headlights, rear windscreen wipers etc, etc. Fads, the lot of 'em.
Does that make the industrial revolution a fad as well?

Progress is progress and technologies move on, if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a serious accident you might well be really glad your car has been fitted with a safety "fad".

Jeeese, talk about being a ludite, or are you just out for a wind up?

Errrr. It's call irony.

Good grief. Do you seriously think I would come here and decry seat belts and airbags?

The fact that technologies move on was exactly my point to the guy who was claiming winter tyres were a fad. But it clearly went over your head.

In response to the OP, absolutely brilliant... with winter tyres on (see below).

Just been to France and back. A foot or so of snow and no problems. Guess then I must be a skilled driver (23 years OTR).

Got my family home safe (unlike some) and I am thankful for my winter tyre-shod XC60.

I'm afraid I have some bad news for you.

We may be very good at engineering safer and safer cars but the sophisticated subtleties of human risk taking behaviour are far more difficult to engineer.
You may feel far safer and comfortable in a modern car, but the reality is, you face exactly the same risk to life and limb as you did 40 years ago.
