Default Upgrading the sat nav

Just bought a 2nd hand xc90 exec model and I wish to update the sat nav. Can someone please advise the best option and how the process works. Is it just a case of getting some 2nd hand DVD discs or do I need to go to the dealer? Adrian

Thanks but rather than just get the latest maps I was also hoping to get the postcodes search function. Is it even possible to replace the unit with a more advanced Tom Tom version?

The latest update from your Volvo dealer will have the update to allow full Post code searching, the latest maps, and Speed cameras.

You can check for available updates on this Volvo web site :

The problem with the official Volvo DVD is that it is ridiculously expensive at around £200.

The DVD disc has to be left in the player permanently, but at least this stops it from getting scratched.

It is not possible to "roll back" to the previous map version,
so if the DVD disc fails for any reason, the system won't work.

I have no experience of DVD discs provided from anyone other than Volvo,
but be aware that if you buy a copy of the official Volvo DVD then it is an illegal copy.
If it's not a copy, and it fries your DVD player, it will be quite expensive to fix or replace !

Interesting, on the Volvo updates .... how did/have Volvo handled the "speed/safety" cameras legislation in France.... ?
Since the 1/1/12 it is now illegal to use a device that has them loaded ... TomTom for example have now removed them from the updates and any previous installations have also been removed (although I assume you can get round that by doing a restore of the French Blitzer files.)

Drove through France last night on my way from UK to Germany...I have the latest Sat Nav software and maps loaded in the DVD reader...and certainly I have the speed camera warnings popping up as usual - and they are spot on...

I confirm that full UK postcode search is on the latest Sat Nav upgrade of software and maps for my MY...I too only use the OEM Volvo DVDs in the DVD reader under the passenger seat...

I also find the fixed speed and traffic lights cameras (and I mean fixed) are all there and I travel through quite a few countries.

Don't forget that for the money quoted...you also get the next update for free - just fill in the coupon that comes with the DVD set and send it off to Volvo...

Also never had a problem with TMC in those countries that provide this on free FM frequencies

And if you use the Easy/Fast/Short properly I've never had an issue with the directions...

Most annoying - the voice repeats the next instruction too many times - I'd be happy just to hear the instruction once...so I just turn the volume down to 0 (except on long journeys where it goes on 1 to hear the Fixed Speed/Traffic Light Cameras - shutter click warning of an upcoming camera)

The latest update also provided 3D/Perspective view...smashing!
