I wander how smart the cameras are.

I was coming back from Yorkshire this weekend. Speed limiter/cruise set to 70mph along the M1. It was a nice yet boring 70mph drive there and back.

On the way back, some idiot was tearing along in a white VW, went through the camera at the same time as me and got flashed. Are the cameras smart enough to know which is the offending vehicle?

I saved the incident from the dash cam (which also has speed enabled) to the computer incase I get lumbered with a ticket in error.

I'm speculating, but I'd say yes. Because they're aimed at the lane to which they respond. But that won't count as evidence. The real evidence lies in how far the car moved between camera flashes, and that's why there's a grid painted on the floor. Exceed a certain distance in a given time, you're going too fast.

So in your case, your car will have travelled a certain distance. The other car will have travelled twice as far if he's going twice as fast, so they will know who is the offender.

Had this quite a few times now, although not 100% sure I was in the camera's target grid but no fines, certainly makes you jump when it happens in the dark though & frantically look at speedo & the road sign information on the dash.

Just after they opened up the Smart Motorway section through Northamptonshire I was on the Northbound when five cars went battering through the speed Camera that flashed all of em in one go... It'd be interesting to see if all of them got done or just the first one to get detected.

Like Canis said, there is a grid/set of lines for the caera to have a distance reference relative to the time between shots.

There are 5280ft in a mile, 60mph = 1 mile a minute or 88ft/sec, 75mph will be 110ft/sec and 90mph = 132ft/sec so you can see how they can easily relate distance to speed if they know how close the camera shots are.

If two cars are caught in different lanes by the same camera, if one is at or below the speed limit then the distance traveled between shots will be proprtional to the time between the shots, conversely if the distance traveled is far in excess of what it would be at the legal limit plus an amount for the speedo error then that car is obviously speeding.

If you were at or below the speed limit (or even a smidge over) i wouldn't worry unduly.

Yes, HADECS 3 is perfectly capable of identifying the speed and which lane it is in.

HADECS 3 doesn't rely on road markings, in fact there won't be any (unless it is an upgrade from a HADECS 2 camera in which case the old paint may still be there). It uses a secondary independent radar check.
