If the radio was originally fitted by Volvo with the car, phone FRF Volvo of Cardiff (see 'Trader's Offers and Discounts' under 'General Topics' at main opening page). They offer a free service providing the code if all is as original.

Other than that use Goggle and you will find helpful videos showing how to read the diodes.

I went to the parts dept' at my local Volvo dealership with my ownership document : in a matter of seconds they gave me me radio code for free.
Good luck.

After many years of no radio I emailed the address given and they replied very quickly (Bank Holiday weekend so it was the next working day) and hey presto my 1990 740 estate radio is back! Thank you very much for your posts bob12 and S40D Sport.

You have waited 3 years .... no wonder I didn't remember this thread!!

Great news though that it's finally resolved and always good to know an outcome. Was that recently or some years ago?

I only found this thread the other day and although it is an old one it proved extremely useful!

I emailed ' parts@frf-motors.co.uk ' this Saturday but with it being Easter they got back to me today. After a good many years of having no radio as original owner did not note the code (we are only the 2nd owners) I just thought I would try and find if it was possible to find one! So thank you again for very helpful information (and other threads about the 'err' message and leaving the ignition on for a couple of hours to reset it back to 'code'). Very happy!
