Default Volvo Guard II system playing up

Recently the Guard II remote system on my 1997 940 has begun to malfunction. The main remote that I used no longer works and I have tried new batteries. The spare fob however does work, although it is intermittent and requires a few attempts. It has come to the stage where I therefore can no longer trust the system and am now using the key to lock the car.

Has anyone else come across this issue?

Yes, in a word.

If you look behind the trim panel on the pasenger footwell side there's an orange relay. This controls the Volvoguard system; unplug it, give its contacts a clean with switch cleaner and re-install it. This USUALLY fixes the problem, although given the age of the cars, there may be a dry solder joint inside the box.

Once re-installed, try to resynch the fob(s) as per the handbook: ignition on and off 5 times in quick succession then press either of the two buttons and check that the alarm LED flashes.

I took that orange box out and sprayed electrical cleaner on the contacts. I popped it back in and no joy unfortunately. I think maybe the solder joints need looking at. What is worse, I tried the key fob and it locked the car and now I cannot get it back in. The car is completely immobilised.....

I am hoping this won't mean a costly trip to the main dealer.

PM me - there's a workaround available.

The alarms just don't last aswell as the car. You can fit a afternmarket one to the same wires or just unplug it and bypass the starter motor immobiliser. You will still have the chip key immobiliser (linked to the fuel ECU so fairly secure).

Can you fit a replacement orange box with matching key fobs?

I think you can; I've got one that came off a breaker and fitted it into the Exxon Valdez. You'll need to "slave" the existing fobs to it, just as you would normaly.
