Default Late Delivery and Broken Promises

Has anyone else experienced delayed delivery and broken promises from Volvo and their dealers?

I ordered an XC90 mid March, paid a deposit and was promised a delivery in early May. The main reason I chose the earlier (vs online route) was he reassured me that he had a delivery slot, I really needed the car, so was prepared to pay 1500 quid more than other quotes I had. I update the specs I wanted 3 days after the original order, no problem says the dealer and that Volvo have confirmed delivery again for early May.
Mid April dealer called to say he had just been informed by Volvo that they did not accept the spec changes from March and had started building a car I no longer wanted! Seems hard to believe as the the new specs were completed only 3 days after the first order, and the dealer confirmed both the changes and delivery slot with me! Upshot was - I could have a car I don't want (wrong spec) or suffer a 5 week delay to get the car I ordered (delivery mid-June).
Dealer was pretty good and agreed to lend me a 2nd hand XC90 from mid-May until car was delivered, as I explained I have made family plans that needed a 7 seater. No surprise that despite constant chasing no replacement car was supplied and I am now seriously inconvenienced. Dealer has now washed his hands of resolving the issue and told me to go to Volvo UK.

Anyone had a similar problem? What do you all think, does the story add up?

Very stressfull for you sort of takes the shine off buying new.

There is a massive shortage of quality used cars especialy 4x4 s at the moment after the bad press they had a couple of years ago, and may take a few years for this to change. Our local dealer is selling every new xc90 he gets in straight away, my brother who works for a dealer reckons some pre ordered cars are being put back as new stock are selling at a premium.

Might be one of the reasons ?
