distributor timing mark
1979 245 b21a engine could someone tell me where the corresponding mark is on engine, I spotted a groove in the backplate and assume this is it,? However this would be at TDC and I want the full range of advance on the distributor slot, So experiance and advice would be appreciated guy's I have looked online and the diagram's and pic's available are all differant

When the distributor cap is removed there is a small notch on the outside of the distributor body.
Align the rotor with this notch, it will be number 1 piston at TDC. Hope this helps.

I assume that you've got a timing light . The mark on the crank pulley is tdc , so you will need one to get the timing spot on . Also a rev counter to check the advance is working correctly throughout the rev range .

Assuming that points are still fitted, it is possible to set static timing with a multi meter or a test light. When points begin to open, voltage is indicated
or light comes on. Setting correct gap at the widest opening should give sufficient Dwell angle to operate correctly throughout the driving range. Beneath the points plate is the advance . There is more in the forums if you take a peek.. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=95759
