Default Stuck Driveshaft V40

My wife took her 2015 V40 D4 auto to Volvo for a service. 100k miles!

They called her and said it had an oil leak from the driveshaft and want £900 to replace the shaft.

Surely seals can be replaced without needing a new shaft?

She told them to go ahead with the job.

They have now called to say it's seized and they have to take the gearbox off and send it to a workshop for the shaft be pressed out.

I know nothing about this model but this sounds unlikely to me.

Anyone know better?

My son and I have just taken the passenger side driveshaft out from his 2014 V40.

It comes out on the wheel end by removing the driveshaft bolt and knocking it through.
It comes out from the gearbox end by pulling it towards the wheel.
Not sure what they want to press out. Maybe the wheel end has seized but that just means a bigger hammer.

volvo have a special tool for helping to pop the driveshaft out if some other company dont knowhow do it take it back off them at no charge and book it into a volvo dealer.

Thanks for that.

It's in a Volvo dealer, Waylands, Botley in Oxford for a service.

They rang her to say one of the front springs was rusty/broken and she agreed to them being replaced.

Then they rang saying there was an oil leak from a driveshaft which needed changing. They told her they had a driveshaft in stock which I find strange!

Then they couldn't get it out!

Really I wanted to know if

a) oil can leak from a driveshaft? (I don't see where from) and

b) if it's just a torn rubber gaitor why can't they change that

and finally c) is a stuck driveshaft a common thing on a 2015 V40 on 100,000 miles?

I will be seeing her later so I might learn more.

No but Oil can leak from the Gearbox seal though.

They can change the rubber gaiters if GREASE is leaking out.

No a stuck driveshaft is not at all common, Have they used the proper volvo wedge tool to remove it? (9995681)

If they Have not used the volvo tool then they can bend the circlip on the end and it will be very difficult to get out...

I visited the Volvo garage this morning.

There is no change. They have used the correct Volvo tools (they showed them to me) and are unable to extract the shaft from the gearbox.

They assure me that they haven't seen one like this before and they've changed thousands of them.

They say it's seized because it's rusted but I'm certain they've managed to catch the circlip and jam it in the splines.

They are now getting a quote to remove the gearbox and take it to someone with a press to remove the shaft at my expense.

I suggested tapping the shaft back in, re-attaching the rest of it, and continuing to use it. However they don't want to do this as they say it would be unsafe.

Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap, safe solution?

What a mess... has that shaft ever been out before?

They wont have changed thousands at all in the 45 years I have been working on them I have taken maybe one a year in and out with no problem.

I think your suggestion is best, you are dead right about the circlip being bent. where exactly is the oil coming from?

Thanks for that Clan.

There has never been any oil on the floor from my wife's car. I've been underneath it a few times and never noticed anything untoward.

As part of the service the Volvo dealer sends a video of anything of note to the owner. She showed this video to me but it was useless.

It was made by an arrogant sounding young man and consisted of a constantly moving video so that it's impossible to focus, and varying light as he moves underneath but points the lens toward the light and then back under, so that you can't see anything.

It sounds a good service but it's worthless.

I imagined the leak was from the inner end but when I spoke to them yesterday they said it was from the outer, wheel end.

By this time I was so angry with them I didn't bother asking them the obvious.

I believe it was done by one of the young, less experienced mechanics and by the time he asked for help it was too late.

I think they are responsible for any additional cost but how do I get them to accept that?

Sorry I meant to add that we bought the car when it was about a year old with about 20k miles and since then she's had it serviced by Volvo all the time.

As far as we know the shaft has never been out.

Last year she had the problem with blocked exhaust recycling system and they told her it would be £1700 in parts alone.

She told them to go ahead and after a day or so they rang her to say there would be a delay and they had to call in an expert to solve a problem.

So I searched on the internet and discovered a great video by a polish chap showing exactly what to do to remove the filter and clean etc. He was very insistent about making sure not to drop nuts or bolts into the engine.

So I told my wife to go and speak to the service manager and ask if they'd dropped something into the engine.

Suddenly there was no charge for the work!

So she said she'd never go there again! The thing is it's just a short walk from her house so it is very convenient.

Well I'm quite sure there is no circlip on the wheel end. I took one out of my sons V40 2014 2 days ago and the circlip was the gearbox end.

Might want to ask them to confirm exactly which end is stuck. By your previous comments it sounds like gearbox end.

If it is gearbox end then there's no risk as it hasn't and will not come out. i'd ask that they put it back together and find an independent garage to do the work or drive the car and monitor any fluid leaks.

just my humble opinion.
