Default Fuel gauge (again!)

Some years ago the fuel gauge in my V40 stopped working altogether, initially fixed by soldering the connection on the sender unit but after it failed again I replaced the pump (having found a dealer having a clear out of old stock).

The gauge has just started playing up again, but slightly differently this time. On starting the card, it often reads just above the red mark but after 5-10 mins will rise to something like the correct reading. Occasionally it'll go straight up to the right reading, and sometimes stay showing empty for longer. I'm guessing the metal scale connectors on the side of the pump are 'sticky' and need cleaning.

What have people found to be the most effective way of cleaning them - iso wipes, wet & dry paper or something else?
