S40 2003. Wndscreen washer pump failure.
In the last 3 years I've had 5 failures of this small pump and taken it to two different garages, one a specialist in volvos. To the point where they even put a dedicated wiring loom straight to it to avoid any wayward electrical issues that may be affecting it but still no joy, gone again.
It's not blockages as all is well when renewed but after say 3-4 months it will break again. Small item but it's a MOT failure each year and costing around £100 to Dixie to the labour and I'm too old to be removing wheels and wheel arches to do it myself. Hope you can help! Brian. |

Not an uncommon problem as the pump part sits above the motor so when the seal fails water gets into the motor and rusts all the iron parts till it seizes. I wonder is your mechanic fitting pattern parts or Volvo original. I would expect 8 or more years from a Volvo part but they are expensive compared to the Chinese copies.

I fitted a universal pump as a temporary fix some years ago, i still haven't got around to fitting the proper part, but this universal pump is still working ok. The pressure is not as good as the original, but that could be because i left the old pump in place & it's probably restricting flow from the reservoir in to the universal pump !

Late reply but as it seems an ongoing problem it might help. If you remove the indicator the pump can be removed and refitted through the indicator hole. You need to use your left hand and work blind. Use washing up liquid to refit. My washer has stopped working a few times, after trial and error I found the fault being the connection between the pump and loom. The pins and connector corrode. I cleaned both and bent the pins on the pump inwards slightly to give a tighter connection, since doing this its worked fine for at least a year.
