I suppose you could probe #4 whilst manipulating the loom and see if you can get a significant change in the reading.

Mid 2000s models also suffered water ingress problems with the CEM wiring so check that too.

Default MAF supply

Unbelievable.

After some time in the EWD the 12V source came from the engine bay fuse box, so I started my investigation.

Start with the basics! No fuse in position "6" MAF.
I now have the same volts as provided by the very helpful Cheshired5. I now have a MAF signal in VIDA, Starting issue the same, stalls 3 or 4 times,

I'd like to steer my investigation towards timing (injection timing), but don't know how to view / test. ?? Good / bad idea? Why, because I hear old school pinking (pre or post Top Dead Center incorrect destination/firing) when I blip the throttle. Any direction greatly received.

You need to get the Vida MAF figures again at idle and through the rev range as they were missing earlier in the thread.

Timing marks and how to compare them are in my D5 timing belt change video.
Basically whip off the belt cover, manually turn the crank pulley until the cam pulley mark lines up with the mark on the top of the belt rear cover then look for the crank pulley mark in relation to the oil pump housing.

Default MAF Signal

Struggled to start, 5 - 8 seconds cranking, starts, stalled three times at idle.

Please see attached screen shots, "6 Degrees OAT" on dashboard.

Dash info message " High emissions service required."

Engine now revs past 2.6K

Thanks in advance.

1. What is happening to rpm and rail pressure during extended cranking?

2. Check the crank and cam timing marks

3. Do an updated code read and individually click on any ECM codes and View Information bottom left for an explanation of possible causes and fixes.

4. Right from the beginning, there's been reconditioned injectors which will almost certainly not have been compared to the Volvo leak back ranges so try different ECM optimising settings in Diagnostics >Vehicle Communication >ECM (from the overhead vehicle diagram) >Advanced and follow the onscreen steps to check the current injector class programmed into the ECM and reprogram to the 3 alternative injector classes available to see if any improve matters.

Default VIDA Data

[QUOTE=cheshired5;2683812]1. What is happening to rpm and rail pressure during extended cranking?
QUOTE]

1. Live VIDA data, Rail Pressure - The Fuel tank transfer pump brings the rail pressure up to 2100 hpa..... before cranking the rail pressure intermittantly fluctuates between 2100 hpa and 4300 hpa, even when the tank transfer pump stops? Bizare or not ?

1. Graph screen shot of the 4th / 5th start today, both starts did sustain at idle and didn't stall. Can I record this info any better?

I'll look at the Code and other work this week.

ECM-4405 EGR valve - Flow too low.

Related CSC
"Starting, Engine hard to start/cranks slowly, Unsure when/at all times, AB
Idling, Uneven idle, AE, Hesitates/surges,"

Flow too low:
Damaged exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
The EGR-valve has jammed in closed position.
Damaged EGR actuator.

Fault symptom[s]
Deterioration in performance
The engine is difficult to start
Uneven idle.

Given the fault symptoms for ECM 4405 Flow too low, are exactly what you're having, sort the EGR code before concerning yourself with anything else.

There are also EGR Parameters and Activations and descriptions of what to look for in Diagnostics >Vehicle Communication >ECM

No doubt there's further EGR information in product specifications too as per the MAF.

Also, given the very simple MAF solution, check the absolute basics first like fuses and whether the EGR is even plugged in given you've been at that area previously.

Default EGR work

Not much to report, awaiting T-60 / 30mm impact / rattler impact gun.

Removed the EGR assembly, I had a new Pierburgh electric actuator to fit to the EGR valve. Having already cleaned the body/cooler/ valve previously it was still clean. The two pin power supply plug #pin 1 tested correct at 12V.
VIDA actuations - you can hear the actuator "click" when the activiation is started. The ECM parameters show the correct EGR closed value for engine starting at 3%. No ECM 4405 Code.

The only ECM fault code now in delivery is for Cruise Control. A positive move fwd on the EGR I think, however all cranking/fail starts/stalls/white smoke still remain.

Timing marks need to check when tools arrive. Then onto injector optimzing checks. I'll report back later in the week.

Default Timing marks

In all the timing marks I've looked on different cars these crank marks really aren't very defined/precise.

I think the timing is in? Just want to eliminate the mechanical aspects

Got an M8 glow plug hole compression tester in on Wednesday.....
