Default What Engine Will This Be?

Evening All,

I'm quite beguiled by this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1996-VOLV...53.m1438.l9372

... not least because of a maintenance schedule that would be the envy of Joan Rivers and a certain weather beaten charm.

Can someone advise me - will this be the 170bhp 20 valve engine?

Any particular problem areas to check for on these (notwithstanding age and mileage)?

Ta, Nick

Unless the engine top cover isn't original, and assuming the description saying 2500cc is correct then that last picture looks a lot like the B5254S 20-valve 170bhp engine.

It needs a clean, but if everything is working and with a full MOT it seems a bargain at the money.

Problem areas in an 850 at that age? Rusty front wings, rear suspension mount bushes, exhaust, generally tired front suspension, aircon not working, possibly electrical gremlins in things like the headlamp wipers, windows and locks, engine top mount? Possibly oil leaks due to the PCV system being blocked (the biggie being the rear main crank seal).

But given its service provenance it looks on the face of it to be a steal for someone.

Went to see this today. Alas, it's chuffing smoke out of the dipstick. Shame - it's a nice old thing and would clean up very nicely but I don't fancy a PCV replacement marathon at the moment. If anyone else is interested and wants further info, let me know.

I wouldn't be put off by a PCV service - I don't know why people are so frightened by them, they're really very straightforward. You don't need to buy the genuine Volvo oil separator box as the PFV own brand one is actually very good and half the price. Just get the hoses.

As long as the rear main seal isn't leaking, go for it and use it as a bargaining tool
