Default D5 Eating Glowplugs

Morning all,

I posted a while back about poor starting when cold and managed to rectify the issue but I think there is still an underlying problem and I had only sorted the symptoms. Some history...

Engine = Euro 5 D5 - 202 BHP

S60 2010 plate with 70k miles bought in October last year after purchased found it had a fault code on a glow plug + needed a new battery. Changed by dealer. Dealer conveniently went bust the week after so became my problem.

Still had poor starting + unburnt diesel. Problem got worse over a couple of months. Vida gave me open circuits on various plugs.

Changed all 5 which fixed some but not all.
Changed relay. Fixed some but not all.
Checked each plug individually using multimeter found 2 of the brand new plugs were now dead. Changed these 2 and finally the problem was fixed.

I assumed the old relay must have been sticking and had killed 2 of the new plugs. This was late winter/early spring and I was happy it was fixed.

Fast forward to now (August) and I have an open circuit on the cylinder 1 plug.

Visual inspection does not show any damage or abnormallity to the tip, the plug is simply in open circuit. I have a replacement to swap in tonight but think there must be some sort of voltage or current problem somewhere? In 20 years of owning diesels I have never replaced a single glow plug before this car and it must be on its 9th or 10th now in 10 months. Any advice or ideas would be welcome.

What voltage are the plugs you've been fitting?

which model year is it? there is no S60 for 2010 , the 2009 finished at end of 2008 the new model was launched around mid 2010 maybe a VIN would help !

The glow plugs for 2009 and 2010 are different , I guess they have given you 2011 glow plugs for your 2009 model .

Its a new shape one, MY11 I guess although reg Sep 2010. TBH I think I took the part number from Vida-Dice first time round and ordered using that, but will check the part numbers when I get home. What I do know is the ones I have been putting in are the same part number as the ones that have been coming out (were in there when I bought it)

Right important lesson learnt. Do not assume that just because part number "x1" comes out of the car, and ECP agree that it is actually the correct part.

Note to self always check VIDA - seems I should have 7v plugs in there. Presumably the problem relay was faced by someone before me who changed all the plugs to the wrong ones and I have followed suit. Probably why the car was traded in.

5 new plugs on order

Thanks all.

They aren't necessarily just used for cold starts any more. At least with the Euro 4 they are also used during the dpf regen.
