Default Rear wheel bearings

Seeking peoples wisdom please.
Having recently had cause to remove a halfshaft from my '72 145 I am finding it difficult to understand the thinking behind the design of the outer bearings. I am familiar with the need for shims to adjust end-play on an Amazon axle, but there is no method of adjustment on the 145. When the halfshaft is installed the securing plate pushes against the outer oil seal which in turn pushes the inner part of the bearing(retained on the halfshaft) into the outer part(loose fit into the axle tube). The bearing is a taper roller bearing that usually requires a 'pre-load' like the side bearings of the differential, and as such any end-play will also create lateral play. Does the outer oil seal have the ability to deform under compression and retain a degree of force on the bearing to eliminate end-play? On the other hand, have I missed something?

Sounds same as 240 axle, that i recently did. just bolts up with securing plate, an someone is your uncle. Just make sure inner race hasn't/doesn't move, on shaft, when u knocked halfshaft out of axle.

Thinking about it, it's the locking ring, not inner race, that mustn't move. It's that thick steel ring, holds it all in place. A garage friend says he once saw a 240 with the wheel outboard of wheel arch about 9". . . presumably the locking ring was sliding along the half shaft.

It is indeed the locking ring that is stopping the half shaft from moving outwards. Although that ring and the bearing inner are a tight fit on the half shaft I am surprised at the lack of 'belt and braces' like circlips that are common place on anything associated with wheel security on most vehicles. I'm surprised about that 240 story though since the brake caliper will stop the disc travelling too far outwards. Even if the locking ring doesn't fail altogether, any movement over time will introduce extra end play and because the bearing is tapered, side play as well.

X million 240's can't be wrong! I was suprised, too, no circlip or owt. An yes, i wondered about that, disc stopping outward movement. Source is well-respected local garage chap, must be something in it.

I guess the locking ring an inner race are fitted TIGHT. It does say in book, easiest to cut off with angle grinder, an fit new. Shaft in freezer, heat ring, get on quick.
