I asked this question of the supplying dealer when plugging a trailer board into the car did not produce the trailer indicator I was expecting. After consulting volvo Sweden they came back to me that it was covered by the normal fast flash warning.

I tested it, removed a bulb from the trailer board indicator and indeed it worked as described, replacing the bulb or disconnecting the board from the car returned the system to normal.

My previous v70 had the separate trailer indicator which I expected, when I did not find it on the new car I questioned it's legality and contacted the dealer.
It's a better system as it tells you a trailer bulb is out in the messages.
