Default Distributor Advice

I have a B18 Block bored out and now on a B20 head gasket although retaining a B18 head . I have several old distributors JFUR4 type with either 077 or 026 as the numbers .Not sure exactly what engines that these are actually designed for ? Which would people recommend for my fast road set up with twin carbs ? Not sure about the right or left handed points when ordering new bits . I'm tempted to try Accuspark as they are cheap and have worked before fine for me in triumphs and MGs . I know 123s are very good but until I can afford one i thought Id try a cheaper option .
Any advice gratefully received !

R122;

If they are in a good state, the only diff between the various Dist PNs is the advance curve, and for simply getting your new engine fired and for initial tests and break-in, there's no reason you couldn't use one of those, while researching which would be a good advance curve for your particular engine configuration, and having a specialist set up a Dist for that.

...but I don't know about mixing and matching a Cyl Head and gasket...nothing good can, and has come of it before in my experience...hot-spots at corners in the Combustion Chamber, leading to hot-spot/compression ignition is just the first undesirable side-effect that comes to mind...

Cheers

Edit: That Lucas specialist may have a configurable test-rig (I know the Sunn machines are) on which he can fixture a Bosch for curve checking...that would be worth a phone inquiry...

The Bosch tradition website was very useful. You could look up the Busch part numbers for classics and determine the application for a specific part, or look up a vehicle and find the proper part for that vehicle. Unfortunately the website has been under re-construction for many months now. You could send them an email and ask what those spare distributors you have fit, and what the appropriate distributor number is for your vehicle.

026 is B18A and 077 is B20A. Both have vacuum advance.

Twin carb cars didn't have vacuum advance: B18B had mechanical advance only - a BRILLIANT distributor in my opinion, 009 or 003 - and B20B was similar, but with a useless vacuum retard thing which never worked well.

Advance curves for cars with twin carbs were different to single carb cars so, although the distributors you have there will work, they won't be the best option for your new set up there. You say you have a B20 head gasket, is that a B20B (thinner) gasket in order to alter the compression, or did you alter the B18 head to do so?

My best distributor is the full mechanical advance form B18B that you can slot in any modified engine and set to full advance at 3,000 rpm and it'll pretty much work beautifully. Second best would be a B20B distributor, but just leave the vac unit disconnected. The latter gives the small benefit of the less fiddly one piece points.

Good luck, I've been looking out for 003 and 009 distributors for a while now!
