Mission accomplished. Very gentle rubbing with 1000 wet7dry with oil.refitted, still a bit tight then some more GENTLY refit and torqued up.Now OK
As soon as I had originally fitted number four in block I new that something wasn't quite right. Now there is just the right amount of drag, relative to when I fitted new rings on B20. BTW plenty of assembly grease

New cam shaft fitted and timing gears. Note timing marks. Unfortunately accidentally knocked out blanking cap at other end so will need to remember to replace it when I get engine off stand.

Phew, a close call,I double checked the fitting of timing gears and it looks like i
I'm 180* out. Difficult to ascertain cam position without lifters and push rods in. Tomorrow will fabricate a simple depth gauge and see if both cams are equal in height. Both on number one cylinder should be closed valves and number four I believe, exhaust cam should be starting to lift. Glad I hadn't made any more progress over the holidays!

Good catch on the cam orientation.
Hard to tell from the picture, but I’m assuming your using assembly lube? Gears look dry. Following with interest. |

For future reference, cam position number one cylinder, timing gears at correct position. First pic' number one cylinder, second pic' number four cylinder.
BTW must get improved lighting in garage, will try a LED fitting.

Timing gears refitted and pulley attached.Cam shaft and crank nuts torqued to 100fp+ and tabs locked as per specification. They won't be changing address any time soon. Any body doing this work on B16 note that three different screw lengths used. Take note of position. Two screws shown on left,pic'3 shortest. hope to make more progress once i lose this rotten cold
