Yours might be because it has not been serviced properly , you cant tar them all with the same brush because generally they are superb .

My handbrake in stock form is excellent...new shoes, retainers and springs, and the 10mm nut properly adjusted.

Was actually working pretty well before I took the rear disks off for the first time to check the lay of the land, and delaminated the shoes in the process Where are these "facts" then? I can read all about a thing that doesn't work...that works really well on my car....

Can you tell us why the bad design is ? They have always worked fine from 1968 until around 2008 when the later models took over . I'm sorry you have never experienced how the brake should operate , Just give it some attention ... 2 clicks and both rear wheels should lock when it works as intended .

The fact the shoes only open at one side with no adjustment on the opposing side. Hence the small amount of wear on the rear most edges of the shoe results in a inefficient mechanism and frequent mot problem creator.
This is also why a common modification is to fit adjustable expanders off an XC90 (I think its an XC90) on the none opening side. Discs have little impact nor do cables unless really stretched. So if youve fitted new shoes and adjusted the cable, well done you , itll work well, for a short amount of time. |

Hi Clan, see above. I started typing this before your reply came up.
I dont know the newer models are like but good handbrakes that require little maintenance are calipers with built in handbrake mechanism. With these you get 100% pads to disc contact. Therefore the handbrake doesnt need yanking up to the ceiling. With out and with some wear Id reckon its a 5th of that. If that. |
