I can get it done in UK or Germany but that leaves my dealer in a difficult position next time he services the car as it shouldn't be on an originally 'Belgian registered' car. Portugal is not on the 'polestar not allowed' list on accessories.Volvocars.com, which also lists Italy, Brasil, and Spain, so I suggest you ask your local dealer. |

I didn't know that about France. I ran a re-registered UK car their on French plates and never had any problems when it went for its CT test every two years. Not knowing saved me having to worry about it!

Just got off the phone with the volvo importer for Portugal. Seems the polestar optimization for the 2.0L D5 brings the car into the next road tax bracket because of the extra CO2 and therefore not offered
Wasn't really interested in the xtra 8hp, but the added torque and a new map for the auto transmission would be appreciated.

The Polestar optimizations, at least those available here in Sweden, don't change any emission values. Well, of course they do, when you use the new power, but not as long as you drive as they do when testing the car. Hence no impact to taxes or anything else.
Also, in this country, insurance isn't affected. It's considered to be the same thing as any other accessory. You're obliged to register it with the authorities, though. But if you "forget", nothing happens. They don't see it at the annual inspection. I'd say that the Polestar modification to my car, an XC70 D5, makes a difference. Not that it's much if you look at the peak figures, from 215 hp/440 Nm to 230 hp/470 Nm, but if you look at the power/torque plot, you can see that over quite a broad range of revs, then engine is quite a bit more powerful. It've very good for towing heavy and large trailers. Last edited by apersson850; Apr 24th, 2018 at 22:02. |

A few further thoughts on Polestar...
Hope this is of help/interest to someone.
Performance: I've just had it fitted (installed?) to our ‘new’ 2012 XC70 D5 auto, which was 215, now 230bhp. It hasn’t made quite as much difference as it did to the mid-range of our previous 2008 XC70 Sport D5 auto, which was 185, uprated to 205bhp. Obviously the earlier car had the older design gearbox, which is known to be ‘lazy’ low down and this aspect was little improved, but the mid-range increase was much more noticeable - well worthwhile. The gearbox in the 2012 has Sport mode, so its standard over-taking ability is pretty good. But with Polestar it delivers similar shove without Sport - and if you use Sport as well, it really flies, both low down and mid-range - so again, well worthwhile! Power delivery also seems much smoother - the engine seems to be working less hard while delivering better performance. Compatibility: In addition to warrranty and consumption/emissions, it’s also worth noting that it is fully compatible with main dealer servicing, especially routine software upgrades. But, as I understand it, most after-market/3rd-party mods/chipping will be deleted by Volvo servicing, usually requiring re-installation afterwards. Do that a few times and Polestar pricing looks comparitively good value, especially when on offer. Insurance: For the 2008 car, I was quoted a £75 hike in premium by Esure which, when I complained (at the time I had a 3-car deal with them), they reduced it to c.£40 which I could live with. Just last week when enquiring about Polestar on the new car, they didn’t want to add anything! In fact, I’m paying about £10 less overall for the 2012 with Polestar than I was for the 2008 before adding it...! However, Ins. Co’s can vary - a lot. Whilst enquiring with Saga about cover for another car (for which Esure wanted an unreasonable increase at renewal), I asked if they (Saga) would also like to quote for the Volvo with Polestar. They said yes, but could not decide exactly what Polestar was, and eventually declined to quote at all - at any price - they even went to their underwriters but were met with a flat refusal to even consider/discuss it. Now expecting someone to come forward with news of a great quote for their Polestar Volvo from Saga...!

Not worth it.
For the record, I had the polestar upgrade installed on my 2014 V60 D5, by the dealer. My insurance came due and my insurer asked for 50% more on my insurance so I had the dealer remove the Polestar mod. Annoyed because the dealer told me it wouldn’t affect my insurance, which wasn’t true. I tried Volvo insurance who weren’t bothered about Polestar but quoted double my current insurance anyway. Additionally, I couldn’t really feel any difference to the performance but fuel consumption was worse.

In Sweden, Volvo's own insurance company, Volvia, is usually difficult to beat when it comes to low cost for insuring Volvos. They don't make any difference between cars with and without Polestar either. But neither does any other insurance company here.

I am with Churchill and when I got the spec for my Police spec SE base model, I informed them of all the "upgrades" - made all of £25 difference!
(ECU upgrade is the same as Polestar + brake & suspension mods)
