Confusingly, the description 'D3' is a power rating and does not necessarily define which type of engine is fitted... for a 2010-on S60 the D3 could be either a 5-cylinder or the newer (VEA) 4-cylinder engine, depending on the model year. Either engine has its own weak points (quite a few on the VEA, I have to say) but these can be mostly avoided by choosing an example with FVSH that has had all recall work undertaken and is up to date on belt replacements.

I think they all have the same M66 manual gearbox, and mine has a nice feel. But I'm glad I have a D4, I'd miss the grunt if I went down a power band.

Like I said, it could be a choice of two very different engines. I realise you might not know which, but at least tell us the year

That'll be the older 5-cylinder engine then. Belts replacement is the big concern on that engine, so check the history.

The windscreen can leak and badly affect the electronics, so push against it from the inside to make sure it hasn't become unbonded at the top. Also check the passenger footwell isn't wet.

Easiest way to tell if 4 or 5 cylinder is to remove engine cover and count the injectors
