Default Dying rev counter?

Hi Everyone -
A what is best described as a "whirring" noise seems to be comming from behind the instrument panel of my 92 240 estate. It's taken me a while to pin the noise down to this area, (many scary moments with eyes off the road) and am sure it is comming from the rev counter. (The noise dies down when the clutch is pushed in at speed and the revs fall, so I'm sure it's not the speedo). Also it's most noticeable at about 2500rpm.
Anyone know the inner workings of the tacho, that could be the source of the noise? I know there is no "cable drive" at the back
like the speedo to cause a problem.
Any advice before I rip out the panel would be much appreciated.

Cheers
John
