Default Rear main oil seal replacement

Good evening all,

I need to change the rear main seal on my 1970 Amazon that has overdrive, is it easiest to remove the gearbox or engine?

Thanks, Doug.

Doug, Just done this over in Hertfordshire !

Look at Amazon cars Videos
Amazon Cars: Remove & Refit gearbox, replace worn top, propshaft inspection (this has good info on removing the gearbox pretty easy
Then
Best rear crank seal: neoprene or felt?

Only bit your need is to remove Clutch and flywheel
I did this with Car Jacked up and using Jack to raise gearbox back on(its heavy)
hope this helps

Good morning Paul,

Yeah I’ve watched it and didn’t realise the box could be split from the bell housing whilst fitted to the car so I’ll probably give taking the box out ago!
Can doing it on your back with hdd we car raised be finished in a day so you think?

Doug.

Hi Doug Yes, unbolt drive shaft, disconnect wires the gear box is held on with 9mm Allen bolts, pulls off make sure you support the engine and gearbox, once this is off makes removing bellhousing easier

Excellent might be next weekends job then, I guess the box to bell housing fixings are probably 3/8” 9 mm seems a very peculiar size, everything I’ve done up to now has been imperial!
Thanks for your feedback!

Doug.

I would definitely say removing the gearbox is easier and quicker than removing the engine. Separating the box from the bellhousing first makes lighter work of the job but the top two allen bolts can be awkward to get at. Either way the gearbox is lighter than many contempory eqivalents. The whole process is covered well in your friendly Haynes manual.

Cool

Hi Doug,
Box removal is not difficult, being easier with 2 people for the lifting part.I don't use a jack at all with 2 people. Once you have done it, the second time takes me about 5 hours to replace a clutch.
As the box mount is lowered, the cooling fan goes quite close to the radiator, be careful, I prefer to drain the rad and remove.

Perhaps I've misunderstood but if you plan to leave the bell housing on the back of the engine and just remove the gearbox you'll be disapointed to find you've got quite a bit of metal still in the way of the rear crank shaft seal.

####

My numerous experiences of lying on my back under cars struggling with gearboxes have been so traumatic that I always remove the engine and geabox in one go.

It is most certainly more work but with out a lift or a easy to access pit I've decided I'm too old to be arsing about on the floor (!)

Admittedly these Volvo gearboxes aren't as heavy as those made by Mercedes or a Land Rover (with a transfer box!) but my approach remains the same. Life is too short to make it more miserable for yourself...
