Usually when those filters come out there is a shower of dust, sticks and insect cadavers.
That being the case I would try to get a vac hose in there to go fishing for junk that has migrated downstream towards the evaporator.

Not in my book Jas, G&K is right, frontmost is nearest the floor/firwall. By the way the filter is made by MANN and the reference is CU/CUK 2855/1
I've just been out and fitted it - the third one I ordered! First was completely wrong not activated carbon and too small, second was LHD and third is just perfect so long as you fit it the right way round (see arrows) the side pieces are split in three sections so it will push up into the housing with a slight bend away from the floor.

Default Cabin filter RHD 2013 XC70

I had similar issues working out on which side with a RHD car. I found the filter behind the centre panel up near the fire wall. I had to remove the panel under the glove box as described above and then removed the side panel by pulling out.

I easily reached and unclipped the cover of the pollen filter and removed the old filter.

Your vehicle is the next generation XC-70 so the layout is different than that of the P2 cars.

I changed the pollen filter in my 2005 xc70 last night.

I didn't realise that there were two types of pollen filters before I purchased a replacement.

The old filter that came out was the thick one and the new one that I installed is the thin one.

My car has the recirc button which says man/auto, so the thick fitler is the correct one.

Does it really matter which filter is installed though?

Over the life of the filter it probably won't matter much.
The thicker filter has charcoal absorbents. When you set the recirculate button to "AUTO" the sniffer will sense foul things and close the intake door to the outside air. I suppose the absorbents then do their job.

How long the charcoal remains effective (before it becomes saturated) has always been a question. If you told me the thing loads up in a month or less, I'd believe you.

Do remember, the main benefit of the filter is to protect the A/C evaporator.

Mahle, Volvo, Hummel-Mann and Corteco make good "thick ones".

Default I'm Thick

I bought a CUK 2855/1 Mann Cabin Filter (from my favourite European Car Parts Specialist) to replace the existing one (CU) on my 18-year-old Volvo V70 as the kids were saying the car smelt (can't say I noticed) and the old one had not been replaced for at least 10 years as far as I can remember.

I had taken the old CU filter out and measured its height and width, but of course, I forgot to measure its depth and bought the thicker one for a few more notes (north of thirty quid).

Still, the CUK thicker filter fitted in the deeper of the two filter bays (the one nearest the engine), and result, the kids (and the more skeptical misses) thought the car smelt better. The old CU filter was chocked full of leaves and debris, so I'm not surprised.

P.S. My other car is an Alfa Romeo (what a paradox)
