I know the meaning of 'What she wants', I drive an old V70 which drinks petrol and costs a fortune to tax, that makes me an environmental nightmare and very expensive, and not to mention that a Volvo is 'too big' and a 22 year old car 'must' be unreliable, Mrs NP drives a Kia, now two years old, it has impressive fuel economy from its little 3 pot turbo and the tax is low, and a new car will never go wrong, but we quickly gloss over the £15k difference in price and the depreciation that will cost more than all of my petrol, tax and occasional repairs. But you should know the saying, A Happy Wife = A Happy Life.

Just for balance, my wife also like's MINIs and has an older R53 Cooper S (supercharged model). It costs £330/year tax if I remember correctly. It makes a better noise than the newer ones, but you pay for it in road tax. I've had cars with twice the engine capacity that were cheaper on tax.

My 14 plate mini gets about 70mpg on long runs and zero road rax, and i genuinely love it, it drives so well. Better built than many premium brands I have owned also, no creaks or bangs.

I was lucky to find a used V90 that was registered just before the Road tax (or whatever they call it this week) went from £30 to £silly in 2017.
The saving helps to pay towards service costs each year. I know, they will get me the next time I change.

The only valid reason to buy a car is because you want it.
Everything else is trying to justify it. I bought a 2wd xc70 because I wanted it. I bought a LandRover discovery 1 because I wanted it. I accept they cost what they cost. The volvo is cheaper to tax than the LandRover but would go first, the LandRover is far cheaper and easier to maintain. If saving road tax is important to you, buy a commercial 4x4, save hundreds on tax but limited to commercial speed limits. Last of the old defender 110s, the station Wagon is a car and £450 tax, the van body is a commercial and £250 I think tax, but subject to commercial speed limits of 50mph single carriageway 60 mph dual carriageway 70mph motorway. Essentially they are the same vehicle. Paul. |
