Default Issues with key fob after battery replacement

I have just replaced the battery in my key fob and now the car will only lock/unlock using the buttons and not the touch sensitive surfaces. The car doesn't always recognize the key to start the car unless it is located in the centre console. All worked fine until the battery needed changing

Make sure you are using a decent brand of battery; Panasonic, Duracell, etc of the correct type, and check it's still in date. These key fobs do seem quite particular about the batteries.

I'm sure your key fob issues will disappear once you have better batteries installed (I'm speaking from similar experience!)

I bought what I thought were some reputable Varta batteries from Amazon and replaced both the XC90 and V60 fobs. Immediately had problems, and constant messages of low battery. Eventually gave in and spent on new Energiser batteries. Since that point absolutely no problems......

I replaced the battery with a Duracell battery so should be OK.

The batteries were changed again in both key fobs and the problem remained the same. Volvo dealer said they did a hard reset on the car but that didn't resolve it, they wanted £120 to run a diagnostic, found another main dealer that charged £90 so took it there. Ran the diagnostic and that came up with a Volvo technical bulletin that advised recoding the keys to the car, still the same problem. Volvo now suggest buying new keys at a cost of £180 each (programmed) and if that doesn't solve it then the headlining will have to be removed to check sender unit which could be a £500-£600 bill. Was working perfectly before new batteries were needed

All sounds a bit dubious to me. You invest in new keys which may or may not solve the problem. Then pay for the privilege of having the roof lining removed only to be told that the sender is working fine, then where do you go, keep spending until you finally hit the nail on the head? If the fob buttons are working I would expect the sender would be working. If I were in your position, and I'm no expert, I would be inclined to go back to basics and start at the beginning. VARTA CR2032 3v (pk4, £3.39, Screwfix) just replaced mine with same, and a good brand. Make sure you put the batteries in the correct way, then I would clean all the touch areas of the handles and see where that gets you. If non of that improves the situation it has only cost the price of the new batteries. It just seems a bit of a coincidence as you say it was working perfectly before the battery change. Even new batteries have been known to be faulty or lost some charge.

Do the £120 swap in upgrade deal for all the keys instead.

However, as you haven't stated what model or model year you drive, the link may be incorrect.
