Default Sport Shocks shock

Hi All,
Time to replace front and rear shocks on my sport. Trouble is the price, even with a good deal from FRF. Rear nivos are coming out at £566pr, front inserts £136pr
Any alternative suggestions?? and who from???
I would like to stay with self levellers but at this price I recon I could get springs and shocks from an alternative for the same money
Your input would be appreciated
Richard

Euro Car Parts Bilstein O.E replacement Front shocks about £92+vat for the pair.

As for the rear nivomats, On my 940 Sport I was scoping ebay one day and was very lucky and picked up a pair of brand new Unipart branded shocks from ebay for very cheap, they were listed for a 700/900. They were so cheap i couldnt refuse them.

I'm not sure if the 940's sports nivomats are different to regular 940 nivomats. perhaps Rufe could elaborate on that.

The car rides perhaps a little higher in the back (but alas i don't have a reference for before hand as my original nivo's were blown) when there fully pumped up but the handling is as excellent as ever.

So perhaps try ringing around local motorfactors for pattern parts. I'll ask my friend in the trade if they can get pattern ones and what price they are tommorrow for ya.

When its settled overnight

Hi,

940 Sport Nivos are different as they are listed under the 900 road holding kit when sold separately. One assumes as the car is lowered by an inch the Nivo's are that little bit shorter. As are the springs.

In my 940 SE I initially replaced the rears with Bilstein Sports along with the springs (ECP gave me some 740 saloon springs which really wasn't right I think, but they were ok if a little lower at the back).

The difference was astounding, my Nivos where positively dangerous, getting a tank slapper round some corners with full boot. These totally transformed the cars handling.

A few years later one front strut top bush popped out (shock hit the bonnet), so I thought it was time to change, so went out and spent about £500 on a set of cobra lowered springs and the Front Bilstein Sports (£92 each!).

Again the diffence was large, but to be honest it was a little too harsh, and you end up going alot slower alot of the time. It really hurts going over ramps, when previously I could do 30 over them, but could not do much round corners.

Now I think it is too low aswell, not as practical as it was for load carrying, and want something inbetween. I kind of forgot what I got the car for. I think probably higher springs might give a bit more, as the progressive Cobras soft is very short and goes quickly in to the hard part.

Default Tank Slapper?

I've never seen a tank slapper on 4 wheels!

Nivos unless cream crackered are normally totally flawless in operation, laden or unladen. I just put new nivos and new front inserts on my B230ET, and my lodger with a quick Focus (not the ST) bottles on the bumpy back roads while I am still running straight and true.

Floor it around a corner, get it sideways and let off the throttle. it can get quite scary!

Default Tank Slapper

You are too young to have ridden a bike with girder forks!

A tank slapper happens when the front wheel of a bike starts sliding - the front wheel goes out, gets the tyre onto the sidewall - no tread (assuming it's dry) = more grip - and it's behind the centre of castor so that whips the handlebars out of control onto the lockstops the other way (ie the bars hit the tank) and then so on alternately. That's why it's called a tank slapper.

The consequence (but not the cause) is similar to the effects of gyroscopic torque of precession when front brakes were first introduced on non-IFS cars with balloon tyres.

Default Update

Have changed the rear shocks for standard gas jobbies at the moment. Interesting to note quite how much lower the rear end is without self level
Having removed Nivos previously on both 240 and 940 the ride height did drop but not as much as the sport.
Therefore I must conclude that the Swedish Sport spec relied very much on the self level aspect of the Nivos to get the final ride height rather than the springs. This would place excessive load on the Shocks and may be the cause of the failure . I have had excellent durability from the Standard ride height Nivo in the past
I have always been 'old school' when it comes to handling and know that a bit of ' dig in' at the rear often gives better handling than the nivos fighting against their anti roll bars.
So I might stick to a shock and spring replacement from Bilstein or similar rather than paying £566 for the genuine rears. Any recommendations?
Front strut inserts come next.
Does anyone know if the strut tube nut special tool is the same as 240 (which I have)

I would concur with you on this.
