Default V70 D5 185bhp Exhaust Gasket Advice

Have noticed for a while now the smell of exhaust gases if the car has been idling on the driveway for a little while and step out from drivers door. Did have look under car a few months ago when it was on ramps and couldnt see any obvious leaks.

Had a look under the bonnet last night and started the car from cold and I can smell fumes coming from the back of the engine at drivers side. Seems to go away once car has warmed up enough so maybe manifold expanding?

Cant see any soot as such but think I need to take off the exhaust cover / shroud off and get better look.

Are there any key places that others are aware of that are prone to leaking as I am thinking it is most likely the manifold gasket at the moment until I can confirm.

If a new gasket is required does anybody have any info or links to video on what is involved. Searched all last night and cant find any guides on replacing it. Do I need to remove the turbo?

From what I have found and read people did say it was a mare of a job

Well I think you need to remove 10 screws in order to remove exhaust manifold (which has turbo on it). Put new gasket and put all back.

If you are unsure, I can see in VIDA tomorrow or day after.

Thanks for that. Had another look tonight and there does seem to be a noticeable loud ticking noise coming from passanger side near the turbo area. That could be something else I may have to look at and add to the to-do list

Thought it was just the camshaft lifters / tappets but they are very quite and less noisy as you move back over to the drivers side. Will take heat shield off and car up on the ramps for a good look tomorow.

Is it worth using a liquid leak detector (or even soapy woder?) to check for leaks before dismantling anything?

Might give it a try. Have seen folks put some rag in exhaust tailpipe to block it slightly and then use squirty bottle with soap in it to find the leaks. Also blocking the exhaust slightly is meant to make the noise of the leak louder. Worth a shot.

Do you have electronic turbo actuator or vacuum?

If vacuum, do check hoses from vacuum pump to actuator and engine mounts

After a little bit of digging have found the exhuast gasket leaking between cylinder 1 and 2.

You can see a small patch of black soot on side of the cylinder head just below the gasket right in between the two cylinders.

Freind of mine had a cheap endescope camera he got from Amazon that attaches to his mobile phone, so used that to have a look up the back of the engine whilst it was up on ramps.

So plan is to firstly try and tighten up the manifold bolts and if as tight as they will go change over for a new gasket.
