Default Is it safe to use fuel additives?

The manual says no so ive listened to the manual and never used any fuel additives but considering this is a 98 volvo and the manual is 15 years old, are modern fuel additives safe to use?

Don't see the need these days as there are additives in fuel already. Save your money.

Why do you feel you need to use an additive ? Is the car running rough ?

Car runs fine so it was really just a general question as i considered using them before my last mot.

I guess i was interested if there was any real benefit or just a waste of cash.

Disagree.

I am a big believer of preventative maintenance.

Both methods have their place, but in this instance i guess hes saying "don't try and fix something that doesn't need to be fixed" as that’s usually when you cause more problems!

If it wasn't for the manual I would have just used these products anyway, but found it interesting the manual said in bold "do not add fuel additives yourself" so there must have been a reason for volvo to write that.

In the past I have used additives. In fact I swear by Slick 50. Why?

...because I had a service done at a garage and they 'forgot' - yes forgot to fill it with oil and left the plug off - so in essence no oil at all. I picked the car up and went straight on the motorway at high speed (70) when I smelt burning. I pulled over and realised what had happened. I had however covered about 15 miles - yes with NO oil at all, yet the engine had not seized. This was down to the Slick50. Nowadays Slick 50 is just an additive, although all those years ago it was a much better product and coated the insides of the engine with a non stick compound, until the two founders fell out and went their seperate ways - with one retaining the Slick50 brand although unable to use the special formula, hence todays Slick50 is no more than an oil ''assister'.

I do not use additives in my cars nowadays, although for older cars I would see no reason not to.

Regards

Regardless, I dare say that incident would've done significant damage to your engine.

I would've taken the garage to the ****ing cleaners :/
