Engine identification assistance please
Evening.
1st post here, hello 👋 I’ve recently purchased my first Volvo, we’re unsure whether it’s a B18A or B18B. Engine number on V5 only states 92875, not much use. Can anyone help? Where can I find the engine number? (1st registration 10-2-1965) Thanks for reading |

B18A is a single carburettor and B18B is twin carburettors. But a lot can have been tampered with in 60 years !

If it’s the original engine the 3rd digit on the vin plate will be a 1, 2 or 3 this is the engine type ID ,

Engine type info and number is stamped on the block just above the fuel pump. Ignore the number cast into the block but it should have B18 cast in unless it has been changed to A B20.

Look for casting on the block as Derek has mentioned
B18 or b20 will be stamped on the block 😎👍

It’s if it’s an A or B spec he is asking, if it’s the original engine the vin plate should tell him, if it’s been changed other than measuring the valve timing I’m not sure how to tell, anybody know any other difference?

Like you said other than measuring I would get a engineers shop to confirm that way you know 💯 then without a shadow of a doubt Yes you can get the engine numbers and check what it was when new of course decode it
