as clan said above
vida/dice is very easy to use, its very cost effective, and "new user" proof really
add in that it contains the full "how to" for any job in the car, part numbers And fault tracing procedures, Detailed strip downs to get to what is needed, it is very very useful, even more so when the cost is factored in
and it doesnt need you to be an electronics whiz and automotive genius to get it to work
Other scan tools, may well work When you spend enough on them
But they will NOT have the detailed, step by step walkthroughs on how to fix/remove/replace things,

So many of this type of thread seem to fade away without any answers so I thought I'd bookend this one in case anyone has a similar problem. The problems appear to now be sorted, all's been good for a couple of weeks now. As is often the case, throwing money at it seems to have worked. The random electrical issues were solved by getting a replacement CEM from volvodiagnostics.com, around £270. Once this was in, the car drove mostly ok apart from the occasional stutter and the engine management light being on. I decided to take the advice from previous replies and get it to someone with vida/dice. I found an independent Volvo specialist not too far from home and they diagnosed the MAF sensor as the cause. £385 paid for the scan and replacement sensor and all is now good, although my wallet has felt better.
Many thanks again to all who offered advice.
