940 windscreen washer
Guys,
My windscreen washer valve is blocked. So I'm going to replace it. However I wonder if in have an additional issue. When I fill the windscreen washer up after I put a good lot of water in maybe 1.5 litres plus I can see water leaking out of the bottom of the car. I am wondering if there is a leak or if I'm just overfilling it ? Is there some kind of overflow ? Its not coming out of out of the top. Hope that makes sense. |

Yeah, there's an overflow or vent hose next to the filler neck, but you would need to put about 3 litres to come out there.
Maybe leaking from the rubber grommets that the motors push into, or where the low level float screws on.

Mine leaks from the top rubber where the filler neck pushes in to. Next time you fill it up, shine a torch down there and have a look

Thanks guys. That makes sense. It doesn't come out straight away. I have to put a lot in and even then nowhere near as much as I have put in so I think it makes sense that I've just been overfilling it. I could well have had 3 litres in as when it stopped working my first thoughts were that it was empty when it probably wasn't and I put two litres in. When really the issue was a blocked valve.
I will get that valve changed today and keep an eye on it. |

hi mine used to leak and found it was a split in the breather pipe where it joins onto the bottle so i replaced the breather pipe all ok .also on this subject its worth removing the filter where the filler pipe enters the bottle mine was clogged with gell type from screen wash i think . but a good scrub with hot water and fairy liquid and the water flows straight into the bottle!

It's worth pulling the reservoir out and cleaning the individual parts to remove not only the grime of the past 20 years but limescale as well on the rubber seals that causes leaks - mine used to leak every time i filled it until i did this.
Also renewed the breather hose with some 8mm bore clear PVC hose, used about a metre and ran it up the inner wing towards the bulkhead. Out of interest, which valve is blocked? I've found adding 1/2 pint of white vinegar to the reservoir once every 6-12 months helps keep limescale and dirt down and everything working nicely - also cleans the washer pipework as well and the jets too.

Same shape as the other one further up Bob - perhaps it's the camera angle and the fact i've put the various bits i cleaned on top of it, it's not how it would normally be seen.
As an aside, it now has an extra washer pump on it too, purely for the headlamp washers. The original front washer pump was getting a bit tired so i replaced it with a NOS genuine Volvo one which failed after a couple of years, refitted the original and found it was still tired but had enough to squirt the screen. I had a spare Rover 800 front washer pump so added that with a bit of extra wiring and tubing and the same seal as Rover use to prevent leaks. Now both the screen and headlamps get a good dose of cleaning fluid! Can't find the photos of it though.
