Default V70 2.4T Whooshing Sound - Is it normal?

Quick question for fellow 2.4T owners (can't find answer having searched);

Is it normal to have a very audible hissing / whooshing noise from infront of the passenger side bulkhead area when under hard acceleration (particularly in 2nd and 3rd gear)?

The performance feels strong although the car is new to me so I wouldn't really know if it’s down on power. There are no warning lights on and therefore the correct amount of charge air must be metered / enter the cylinders? However, the more I drive the car the more I think it perhaps shouldn't sound like a jet at take off? Before I go routing around under the bonnet is this normal and if not, are there any particular charge air pipes that are prone to leaking?

Other than that, car running well apart from rough idle / hunting when warm (yes, I am aware of the dreaded ETM issue! – car going to Volvo Garage for a look next week).

Thanks

Default Wooshing sound

Hi there

I have a 52 plate V70 2.4T with 98500 miles on the clock and it is very quiet during acceleration, although it is an automatic. There is certainly no wooshing noises. As a matter of interest the tickover is smooth with no signs of hunting either when hot or cold.

Hope this helps

Mine makes a whine that rises in pitch the faster the engine is turning from about 3000 rpm upward, its only really noticable for me if I really give it some welly in 2nd gear.

As far as I am aware that is just the normal sound of a turbo spinning up, and is to be expected.

it sounds like a boost pipe has gone, i get jet noises if my turbo to intercooler pipe blows off (it's remapped alot lol)
either that or (very rare afaik on petrols) the intercooler has split/got damaged

I didn't think the lpt petrol has an intercooler? If it does it's well hidden and very small!

Thanks for responses guys,

Sounds like I may have a boost leak somewhere then as I’m definitely getting a jet like roar / whoosh of air sound rather than the high pitched whirr type sound of the turbo compressor.

Had thought this may be a normal noise for these cars caused by the rush of charge air through the various bends / restrictions of the charge air pipe over the engine top. Good to get clarification that it’s not a normal sound. I’ll make some time this weekend to have a look around (and maybe unleash a bit more power if it turns out I’m loosing boost ).

MATTYFEZ F - I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that all turbocharged cars require an intercooler in order to cool the compressed charge air. Without it, any benefits of compressing the air would be lost due to very hot compressed air (rather than cool / dense air) entering the cylinders. I believe the intercooler is located directly behind the water radiator at front of car.

The 2.4T low pressure turbo has an intercooler. Fortunately mine not failed yet!

Thanks for the info, every day is a school day!

Out of intetest, mine seems to make a constant "ssssssssss" noise, its not normally very noticable, and the engine in general sounds and feels fine... it only really came to my attention because the is a railway bridge close to my house that i drive under regularly, and if my window is down I can really hear it echoing off the walls of the bridge. This is under normal 30mph max driving conditions. It's a definite hiss, a bit like the sound you can get from a kitchen tap that is running.

Any ideas? Thanks

thats normal, check the rubber boot where the floor meets the angled section where the steering goes through the firewall to check it's not come away slightly (it exagerates the turbo hissing noise)

Sorted!

Turned out to be a badly fitted connection between the rubber pipe which comes off the turbo and the start of the plastic charge air pipe (i.e. pipe that runs over the engine). The location of bit I'm talking about is in behind the engine block between engine and fire bulkhead (i.e directly above turbo). Found by getting my mate to rev it whilst I stuck head under bonnet (very technical!). Car had recently had spark plugs done (requiring removal of charge air pipe) so must have been badly re-fitted then.

Doesn't feel any quicker (felt pretty quick to start with) but now much quieter (apart from normal turbo noise). Was therefore probably just a very small boost leak.

In a way, it's kind of a shame now that it's quite. There was something childishly satisfying about driving a fairly plain looking volvo estate that, when the opportunity arose, could blast past slower traffic whilst sounding like a tornado at take off (there's no pleasing some people)!

Rough idle still there but I suspect this was unrelated (ETM probably).
