The simple things are often the most annoying in my experience. Tyres, bulbs etc. An hour spent checking these and renewing where neccessary is generally time well spent.

Tyres and lights are probably the main things, everything else will be fairly obvious if it's likely to fail, like poor brakes or a damaged seatbelt etc.

There is a check list here http://www.kwik-fit.com/mot-test.asp

It's a fairly straight forward / common sense safety check really.

Totally agree. The amount of people that just turn up to get it tested without checking the simple stuff, get a fail and are then miffed, never ceases to amaze me.

One other tip is always take it for a test WITHIN the last month of your existing test.
If it passes, their is no disadvantage in your renewal date and theoretically you can have a "13 month test".
If it fails you have time to get it sorted and your car still has a current MOT. Simples!

I did not know about the 13 months, I thought the MOT was 12 months from the test date.

Anyway.... IT PASSED.

Needed two little side bulbs, I knew they were as dimm as hell, but thought nothing of it. The old ones were all silver???? Anyway, all good good.

Basically if you have yur test done early and it passed you can have the extra time (upto the 3 year mark ) added to your MOT cert, to a max of 1 month. ie if you MOT was due on the 20th september 2010, but you had done on the 20th August 2010 and it passed cert would still run to the 19 sept 2011 (ie 13 months)

But:

"An MOT certificate is valid until its expiry date. However if your vehicle fails a test before this date and you do not rectify the defects then you are driving an unroadworthy vehicle which is an offence."

I was thinking this before.

If someone took it early, say two weeks before it expires, and it fails, does it them become unroadworthy?? And does the current MOT be dismissed??

Can't really be as the guy said I will have 10 days for a free retest if it fails??
