Default DPF system (1.6d DRIVe - D4164T)

Well, my '09 S40 is just reaching the 75000mile mark. So far everything seems fine DPF wise.
As topping up the EOLYS tank (DPF additive) is part of the 75k service, I've asked for prices for the service. As I don't want to replace the DPF just yet they recommended cleaning it which is done with some sort of spray.

I'd like some advice from all of you other owners:
- EOLYS (DPF additive): should I top it up now or can I wait until the car complains (I think it pops up a message and you can read the fault code)? Are there any disadvantages for this?
- DPF cleaning: is this kind of cleaning worth it? Or should I just let it be and wait until there's a real reason for cleaning?

Thanks!

Hi there I would make sure the additive oil is replaced if not it will reduce the life of the dpf my personal thinking is unless the car has actually done 75000 mile I would leave it until then or somewhere between 75000-100000miles I have not seen one fail on the 1.6d but plenty on the 2.0d usually about 100000miles onwards. At the end of the day if your keeping the car for the next few years you know it will eventually need replacing but it's a cost you could possible put off slightly longer to help save for it?! Good luck whatever you decide!

The service is worth doing as is the top up, BUT I would not replace the unit until it fails. Removing and knocking the ash out is an alternative to using a spray in professional cleaning system:

I was actually thinking of postponing the additive a bit until the next service... that will be around the 79000 mile mark.
As for the cleaning maybe passing it up altogether, as I'm not sure of the real efficiency of this kind of cleaning.

I should have included that removing the DPF and bashing the ash out might not be worth doing unless you are a real keen auto DIY'er.

How long the partial kleen lasts is going to depend on what the engine does and a lack of steady sustained WOT at least once a month, in combination with a high oil consumption is bad news for the entire system, EGR, CAT and DPF. The EGR can be cleaned, the CAT should last 20 years, so the DPF seems to be the first item for the bin.
