Default 1997/R V40 2.0 "Confusing" headlights

Hiya guys.

I'm getting a confusing lighting combination.

With the switch on "O" I get sidelights and mainbeam.

With the switch on "Dipped" I get no lights at all.

And with the switch on "Main" I get the same as in position "O".

Is this a common problem? Does anyone know what the hell is going on here?

Thanks.

"O" is for daylight running lights, middle is side lights, and 2 is main lights. The difference between "o" and two is that on 2 you can switch to high beam, and on "o" you can only flash high beam .

Thanks Piperdave for your reply.

Ahhh so "O" doesn't mean "Off" then. Thats cleared it up. My side lights must be at fault then. Bulbs or relay problem.

Cheers.

is the car second-hand? has it been bought like that or has it developed the fault?

if its the former, i would check the wiring

Yes mate its WAY second hand!

I've taken the switch out and the wiring colours seem to be in the correct positions. I may check the side light relay to see if its faulty. But I know I have to change both headlights anyway cos they are both pointing upwards so much that I can't see where I am going unless I use the fog lights! They are held in by cable ties so there is no adjustment at all left there. RAGE!
