Default oil leak

hi!! need some advice on an oil leak on '95 T5. Recently had rear main oil seal changed, but now noticed car dripping oil again.

On inspection, the rear of the engine has oil on it, but low down - no higher than the intermediate section above the sump. The onlt place where it's higher is around the bottom of the turbo oil return pipe, and i'm personally not convinced it's that.

Are either of these 2 places common/prone to leaks? If it's the gasket between the intermediate section and the crankcase, is it difficult?

Is it somewhere else i've missed!

Thanks

Kevin

The turbo drain to block seal is an INCREDIBLY common fault on these. Not too bad to fix but all has to be done from underneath. Remember to order a gasket for the drain-to-turbo end of the pipe also. Gasket and seal should be less than £10 and take around an hour - most of this will be cleaning the parts prior to re-assembly!

A leak on the block-bedplate joint is not so common and is INCREDIBLY difficult to fix ... engine out and strip off bottom end etc etc ... not for the faint hearted!

Do the t/c seal first and see how it goes

All the best

Steve

thannks, ill try the turbo pipe first.

Do you have to remove turbo to remove pipe from the block?

I know i did when i did same job but on 940 turbo - as the pipe slotted into the turbo as well as the block, so no way to remove without turbo off first.

Thanks,

Kevin

aha - you're in luck sir ...

the pipe at the turbo end is terminated with a flush sealing flange so no need to remove the t/c.

Visit volvospeed.com for details of how to do it.
You will need a 5mm allen socket and long extensions.
You may also need to loosen the water or oil line to get enough room to remove the drain pipe.

why 2 o-rings ?

mine (94 855 T5) has a paper gasket at the t/c end, and a square section o-ring at the block end ...

I had a similar problem and I was sure it was more than the return pipe. I ordered a gasket and '0' ring which cost less than £3 and fitted them and the bottom of the engine and car went from an oily mess to bone dry within a week.
By far the hardest part is jacking the car up to do the job. Then you undo the 2 allen key bolts on the return pipe flange where it bolts to the turbo and pull the pipe out the back of the block.
Hope you have my luck
