Stronger sidewalls I would guess. I almost got caught out by the slight difference in title as well when looking for who had them for sale. It was only because I'd seen them first on the Nokian web site I pursued the matter until I realised there were two variants. All the XC diesel vehicles to date use the same size tyres.

Forgive this general question please, but I'm sure there are learned people on the forum who can provide the answer.

If the smallest recommended tyre size for a car is given as 255/65 R18, but it's fitted with 245/55 R18 tyres instead, what effects or difference will this make?

I'm thinking the speedo might not read correctly.
Thanks.

8.53 % smaller Speedo will read under by approx. 5 mph at 60mph. There is normally an under reading of speed on the speedo anyway. Often about 10% lower. So speed will be quite a long way out? You'll use a bit more fuel and accelerate a bit faster, and have a bit harder ride.

The diameter is 62 mm less so would sit 31 mm closer to the road. Guess that might improve cornering a tiny bit.

I didn't think that was the original tyre size of an XC90 though, which is 235/60/18 and quite close to the 245/55/18 size which is 1.72% smaller than the tyre size normally fitted. 255/65/18 is larger than the original fitment size by 6.28% and would make the speedo read pretty accurately I would have thought. Should use a bit less fuel and give a better ride. assuming you have the torque to cope that is.

I've just had 2 Pirelli Scorpions (235x65x17) fitted to my 2010 D5 Active and can't fault them. £120.00 each, inc. balancing, fitting and vat from Thornton's Tyres in Syston, Leicestershire.

Roy,
This isn't the same as your original response. How did you manage to amend it after I had thanked you for it?

No idea. I edited it straight away as I noticed I had made an error by pressing the wrong button on the calculator. There was no thank you on it at that point.

Hi Roy,
I copied your original response to my Daughter in Canada who has been sold a bit of a Lemon (not a Volvo I hasten to add). I noticed that it had been fitted with tyres which were not the same as should have been used, hence my query.

Your revised response has also been passed on now.
I have advised her to not rely on the speedo as you pointed out.
Thanks again.

Time for some new tyres but struggling to find 2015 Nokian Weatherproof SUV.

Are they in short supply?

They are available from Tyre Leader.

I bought some tyres a month or so ago. Nokian Weatherproofs were available from Oponeo then but now seem to have sold out. I guess this is the usual supply/demand swings and roundabouts and response to the annual 'snowiest winter for years!?!?!?' headlines in the press.

Thanks for finding some!

In the end, went for a pair of Goodyear Wrangler HP All Weathers on the front. £120 each, fitted. Replaced all 4 over 3 years ago and the back pair still have 5mm tread on them, so working out at 2:1 front:rear.
