Default Shift lock overide

Mothers 99 S70 D has this button next to the auto lever but it doesn't seem to do anything.
What is it?
What does it do?

It over-rides the lock up...but I think the ignition has to be at position 1 or 11 to allow it to work.

It over-rides the lock up (so you can free the car from park mode)...but I think the ignition has to be at position 1 or 11 to allow it to work....you'll find that you can't move the lever out of park UNLESS you use the button (given the car isn't running)

With the ignition off and the shifter in "Park", the transmission is locked up - if you jacked the front end up and tried to rotate the wheels you would not be able to do so.

The small button next to the shifter is the shift-lock over-ride - it allows you to "unlock" the transmission without having the engine running.

Put the key in the ignition and put it to position II. Now if you press the shift-lock over-ride button you will be able to move the shifter out of "Park". This can be handy if you need to move the car but cannot start it, or if you need to perform maintenance on the front end and need to rotate the wheels/hubs.

My 2006 XC70 doesn't have a shifter lock overide next to the shifter. Can anyone tell me where it is.

I'm not sure if later cars were equipped with this feature, 'Lorraine'. Although I've never used it myself, my very late (2000) Phase 1 does, but it may have been deleted on later models. Reference to your car handbook should confirm one way or the other.

Regards, John.
