As an example, phone up BMW and ask them why do there new cars come with a litre of edge oil then?. You also say that most of the companys stating that there oil is fully synthetic when it isn't. How is this possible if it says it is on the labeling. The oils have to meet the A.P.I standard (i presume you know what A.P.I. stands for).

you really are showing your ignorance now, the api ratings have nothing to do with it, they are purely a performance spec which as long as the oil meets it it doesnt matter whether its a pure synthetic or made from rapeseed oil, if it performs to the standard its given the rating, im also surprised that given your vast experiance flogging oil you havent heard about the dispue over what constitutes a pure syn as far as labelling goes, do search on google the subject and you wil soon be 2000 percent more informed than you are at present.

Remember during my c&g being told that an oil only keeps its properties for 2000 miles. This doesnt mean change it it just means it starts to stop working as its meant to, remember it does more than lubricate. tho oil has changed massively in the last ten years.
personally I use magnatec ( swear by it) 5w/30 semi syn at the mo.
£20 quid if you have a halfords discount card. Change it every 5000 and flush every other. Remember the most important thing is the api rating.
I also use XL oil addative since I see a demo and it makes the car feel smoother.

Hey Engineer, where can you buy RL in the UK, any petrol stations for example?

My dealer charged quite a lot for Mobil oil at the last service. Will have to ask them if they flush first to clear out the turbo oil too (doubt it somehow). Will also have to check the grade they've used.

You would be hacked off if you sent your 850T5 down to Tesco's to buy the beer and it came back with own brand French Lager ! So why when you go to Halfords / Factors do you buy 'own brand' oil of the wrong grade for your beloved 850 T5 !
The Manual / Volvo says that the 850 T5 in a temperate climate should use a quality 10W40 semi (i.e. Shell Helix Plus, Valvoline Maxlife, Texaco Havoline, Castrol whateveritis.)
The later cars (post '99) are designed to run on a quality 5W40 fully or a quality 10W40 semi.
So use a quality branded oil and change it at the recommended intervals, if you are feeling 'flush' (excuse the pun ) change the oil at half intervals.
Changing the oil more often than half intervals, when using quality oils (unless you are going on a racetrack) is not necessary.
Using a flushing additive or a flushing oil is a very good idea, especially on older cars or cars that do alot of short journeys. However DO NOT use fresh synthetic oil especially on it's own as flushing oil as this would be pointless ! (they are designed not to take on board the crud, petrol, dirt etc that is inside your engine and do this for 1000's of miles, so it will probably just leave all the crud, petrol, dirt etc in your engine !)

Regards,
Hamish.

ended up ordering 20 litres of 10w 40 shell helix plus, cost my 65.80 inc delivery,
not too bad.
seem to hear mixed views about flushing though not sure whether to do it to my t5 or not...

i accept that hamish but as the oil i use is a 5w it comes to operating temprature quicker thus giving a better, quicker protection for my turbo...

i only flush the engine with fresh synthetic oil purely to replace the oil in the turbo oil cooler, for no other reason than that...i cant see the point in paying £30 for 5 litres of oil when .9 of a litre of old oil stays in the system....it has nothing to do with trying to remove any crud from the sump or any other part of the engine....

on a side hamish i will be calling you shortly cos i have just purchased a new ecu and when my clutch is done i will be looking for you to advise me on my tuning options....

cheers

Hi Oli, the best deal I could find early this year for Redline 10W/40 was from

http://www.turbobits.co.uk/

But as always it pays to shop around, try Don he might be able to help you and have to agree with Hamish on the multigrade specs, I once sent my S70R shopping for lager but she came back with Stella, class act lol.
