Default Water pump working?

Hi forum

2016 XC60

I'm not sure if my water pump is working as the fan comes on after a short journey and in relatively cold weather.

Is there a way to identify if the pump is actually working or not?

My thoughts.. open rad cap to try and see movement..

Listen for whirring noise but maybe tricky with engine running..

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

Assuming all the belts are intact I would doubt that the pump has failed to point of not pumping. If the only reason for thinking it's not working is the fan kicking in I would question the whether the fan thermostat is working correctly. How you would check this on an SPA Volvo god knows. How hot does the engine, rad etc get. A IR thermometer would give a good indication (e Bay purchase) Does the heater still give out heat? This relies on hot water being pumped around the cooling system. I'm also assuming the coolant is topped up.

I don't think a 2016 XC60 is a SPA car........

Ahh, should have read original post more carefully. Anyway, for the benefit of the OP if he comes back here there's a current topic on the pre SPA XC60 page talking about Volvo have recently changed aux belt replacement to 3 years[ Worth a view. A belt change would answer his question.

Hello everyone, thanks for your replies.

SPA?

Aux belt replacement, ok thanks shall have a read this eve.

Update. Had a look this morning. I can see the belts down on the left (driver side) and they all look intact etc. so I presume that's the pump spinning..

Did see the coolant is on min... so maybe its something as simple as that!

Previously my dealer has serviced it for the last 3 years although saying that they were rubbish and didn't even bother to fill the screen wash. They also damaged the paint work when they took it back after I noticed before driving away so I guess their mechanic was annoyed and didn't bother taking off his gloves. Zero confidence so doubt they even bothered to check the coolant! ..anyway rant over...!

Anyway, first step shall top up the coolant...

ps. it wasn't the Southampton dealer as I moved to Wales...

If your pump was not working you would overheat the engine and your head gasket would have blown.

SPA?
.
This is the forum for SPA cars. This stands for Scalable Product architecture and is the chassis which underpins the current shape XC90 V90 S90 S60 V60 and XC60. I think due to the model year, yours is not a current shape XC60 so this is the not the correct forum. You will get people with more relevant knowledge on the old shape XC60 sub forum.
