S.I.P.S
Just looked at another 850 (a different one this time) which has SIPS but no driver or passenger airbags. What is SIPS (Side Impact Protection System I know but does it have side airbags or something or just reinforced protection within the doors)?
Another basic question I know but it's important (well maybe). Rhod |

Maybe I was wrong but it was a 1993 L 850 2.5 GLT - no passengers airbag and nothing on the steering wheel saying anything about an airbag. But as I can see from the Parkers revies, all 850s have drivers airbags. Should I be looking out for some three letter acronym for an airbag system or something or do I assume there must be an airbag? Were there any 850s without drivers airbags ever (in other markets)?

>1993 L 850 2.5 GLT - no airbags drivers or passengers (from
>memory). definitely no passengers one but can remember about >drivers. Was drivers airbag standard on all 850s then? Don't know when they became standard, but my 98 S70 has a driver's airbag, no passenger airbag, and SIPS airbags on both sides. There's normally sitckers decals on the middle door pillars to state what there is in terms of side airbags. I'm not sure on this, but I think SIPS, initially, may have just been beefed up side protection - I'm not sure it necessarily means that there's SIPS airbags, too. But as I said, there'll be markings fairly prominently to show you what airbags are there. Lei Chan |

RE: S.I.P.S
SIPS and SIPS bags are slightly different things.
SIPS has been around for a while now, and I think was on all 850's. It stands for Side Impact Protection system. It is an integrated impact system which absorbs side impacts. Basically in a side impact, the door is designed to hold its shape and to channel the forces down towards the floor of the car. The floor of the car is designed to buckle under the tape box/central console to act as a crumple zone. Thus in a side impact, the two front seats will move together and your sacred tape/cd collection will be sacrificed to save you! If you look under the front seats, you will see that they have steel rams underneath which channel the forces and help the seats to hold their shape. There is also SIPS under the back seat, but I think that this is just a re-inforcing ram as there is no area to crumple at the back. SIPS bags came later, and I believe that they are standard on all V70's. These are small 12litre air bags in the side of the front seats which help to protect vital organs in a side impact. On a related note, I saw an 03 reg Passat crash the other day and all 6 air bags went off. They certainly saved the guy as he was still coherent and seemed to only have minor injuries. The passat also had curtain air bags which came down from the roof lining, and seemed to have saved his head from the tree which had stoved the roof in. The only thing of concern was that when we got to the car it was so full of smoke (from the gunpowder charges which inflate the bags) that we thought it was going to catch on fire! Forgot to add, you need to look for the letters SRS. These stand for Supplimentary Restraint System. This is because an airbag is considered an extra restaint after the restraint of the seat belt and pre-tensioner. You may also find airbag warning labels on the front screen.

RE: S.I.P.S
No, you're not wrong, Parkers Guide obviously is! Airbags were not standard on '93 850s and my 1993 K 854 2l 20v GLT doesn't have any, although it has a good smattering of the nicest and most practical optional extras.
Philip has saved me describing the basis of SIPS. I don't think SRS indicating airbags, either - I believe the seatbelt pre-tensioners are part of SRS and I think all 850s have these, mine certainly does. Cheers, AJ |
