Fuel Pump problem
1999 V70 2.3 T5 Petrol
I am having to crank the engine quite a bit to start it. Worse if the engine is still warm. Worse on a hot day. When I turn the ignition to position II I have checked there are volts to the fuel pump, but the volts are only there for a small fraction of a second. Blink and you literally do miss it. I think it should be long enough to pressurise the rail ? I have a spare fuel pump relay but changing the relay makes no difference. Very occasionally the volts are there noticeably longer with the ignition at position II and the engine starts quite quickly on these occasions. Your thoughts please. Regards David

Had a similar problem with my old '94 850 T5, would take ages to start when hot, turned out to be the temperature sensor...
Maybe worth checking? |

Hi David
When you turn the ignition on, the fuel pump will buzz slightly as it pressurises the system. That takes only a couple of seconds, then the fuel pump turns off. You can hear it most easily if you listen near the spare tyre, with the cargo boards lifted. That's normal. So maybe there is another problem that makes it difficult to start. Does the temperature showing on the gauge match what you would expect? Steve

Steve
The pump runs for a fraction of a second so it cannot pressurise in that time. If I turn the ignition on and off 3 or 4 times to position II it starts much easier ie I have run the pump for a fraction of a second 3 or 4 times. On my previous V70 I could hear the pump run for 3 or 4 secs every time I turned the key and it was a very quick starter. How do I get the pump to run for 2 or 3 secs when I turn to position II like it should ? Thanks.

Most likely of all. A common failure-point of the 850R's, certainly, and I'm certain this has a similar relay on the T5R?
If the fuel pressure seems good during normal running, then it rules most other things out.

I have a spare fuel pump relay and swapping the relay makes no difference.

Hi David
Just before and after you try to start, can you test the fuel pressure at the injector rail? Ideally measure the pressure with a gauge, or just release the schrader valve and check that fuel squirts out (catch it in something to avoid spraying fuel everywhere). Other than the starting problem, does the engine run normally? Does the temperature gauge work as it should? Possible useful link https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/fo...ic.php?t=88046 Steve

Hi Steve
Once started the engine runs normally. As others have suggested I have tried to look at the temperature sensor but cannot see it. It is impossible to see anything around the thermostat with all the pipework there is in the way. I thought I would also look at the RPM sensor (made a big difference to the smoothness of the engine when I cleaned it on my old V70 SE) and camshaft sensor connectors. However the 2.3T5 looks nothing like the Haynes manual. Pointers as to where they are on the 2.3T5 would be a help. Thank you for the link - similar to what I experience. So I`ll look at the fuel pump as well. Thank you.

Forgot to say - temperature gauge is fine.
