Default 1999 v70 xt 12v - intermittent indicator malfunction

Hi all,

Wondering if you could point me in the right direction of a fix for this please.

I've got my old v70, had it 3 years - constant leak the whole time but 3 MOTs without an advisory and so long as I fill it up with water every couple of weeks its golden.

It's just developed a weird fault where the indicators dont work. Pull the stalk and nothing happens...what confuses me is the hazard warning lights still work perfectly as do my full beams which are on the same stalk.

Half the time restarting the engine seems to fix it, sometimes it just needs leaving for a while. Seems to be more often when i have left it off for a long while - parked over night and it does it most mornings, park at the petrol station and never happens - could be a coincidence.

Any ideas? My automotive experience sort of ends with replacing fuses and bulbs

Sounds like a faulty relay? Should be in the fuse box & a straight forward not expensive fix.

It could also be the contacts within the switch.
Remove the steering column shroud to access the indicator switch, remove the contact switch and block connector from support leaving the loom hanging (some are phillips screw retained, other models locate using tabs - fairly easy to remove and then separate front of switch from rear (tabs again!)
NB usual Volvo click tabs, beware fragile ageing plastic.

Clean the both sets of switch contacts, a couple of light passes with emery cloth or an emery board is sufficient followed by a spray with switch cleaner/Isopropyl alcohol/isopropanol/propan 1 ol. It is all the same stuff just different nomenclature - (DO NOT USE WD40), followed by a gentle upward pull on each contact using "borrowed" tweezers or long nose pliers to counteract previous wear.

Re-assemble the switch, then plug the contact block back in and test left/right indication before re-seating into the support block.

NB the hazard warning lights run from a different relay which overrides the indicator - ie if you engage the hazards when the indicator is "indicating" all indicator lamps will flash.

Hi

The problem may be related to the hazard switch unit.

This looks like a good answer.

https://www.justanswer.com/volvo/7gw...s-nothing.html

That hazard light switch has been produced under various part numbers
31443714 8622091 8628632 9459071

Maybe you can find a good used one

Steve

If the hazards are working the relay is more than likely OK, as both sides are flashing it means the hazard switch is OK too.
I have had this problem occur with my V70 - it was caused by worn contacts in the indicator stalk switch - it isn't a difficult repair there's a "how to" link
