Default Auto Transmission Slip '02 S40

Hello All,

We recently purchased a 2002 S40 with 40,000 miles. It is a very nice car and is Volvo Certified. Anyway, we took it back to the dealer because the tranny would shift hard into first when slowing down then trying to slowly speed up again.

We got the car back and they replaced the control module and downloaded updated software for it. Now the car slips when going into third gear. Anyone experience this? Thanks for the information!

Angry Erratic Auto Gear Shift

I'm suffering the same issue and worst of all now mine has a violent knock front right in the gearbox. Been told by a volvo specialist from Sweden that a SW update would not solve a thing.

Believe it or not you may have to change the ABS pump as well, they talk to each other to get the speed ratios right.

Exclamation Auto Transmission Slip 'ver02 S40

That's right. A SW update would not solve a thing. I have a similar problem with my plate 51 S40 2.0 Auto. It started off by not registering what speen I'm doing on the clock. The dealers told me I needed a new (Driver Information Module (DIM) Unit plus a SW update. It did not make sense to me especially where there is a knock front-right somewhere on the drive shaft or gearbox. The gearshift was very erratic at times especially during slow down or pulling off.

I fitted new speed and tacho sensors but this did not change a thing either. I fitted a new ABS module and the speedo started working again. The gearshift situation improved dramatically and the car drove like a dream but the knock somewhere front-right remained.

2 months later the gearshift went back to old ways. One day I was doing about 50miles/hr on a motorway and suddenly the gears tumbled down to I think number 1 with a thud. The Engine management light came up plus an orange flashing arrow.

I nursed it to some Volvo geek who applied the SW update and reset the warning lights. The car drove like a dream for about 6 hours and then back to old ways.

Volvo told me I need a new gearbox £3000! I have resisted that and the next thing I want to try is a SW update of all 3. (1) ECM (2) TCM and (3) ABS) modules as they talk to each other to get the speed ratios right.

But still that would not resolve the strange knock somewhere right-hand side.
