Default Poor Idle

1999 S40 2.0T auto.

The old S40 is suffering with its idling. I seems to me to idle to low, sometimes causing it to cut out. When i start it up from either cold or hot i have to 'blip' the throttle otherwise it takes ages to start or doesnt at all.
When cold it idles in gear at 900ish rpm, once warm it idles at between 400 - 600 rpm as indicated by the rev counter. When it idles at 400 rpm there is a vibration which i think is from the engine reving to slow. Once running the car preforms well.

I have searched the forum and i seem not to be alone. I have just had the car fully serviced and was told that he couldnt see anything immidiatly wrong ( he did say he doesnt have Volvo software for his diagnostic machine).

I see some people have cleaned the idle solinoid and the throttle body, how is this done??? did it work??
In the absence of a Haynes manual is it the bit behind the air filter, and where is the idle solinoid?

Thanks
Simon

not quite the symptoms, but have you thought about checking the fuel pressure regulator?

Do a search for throttle body cleaning, there are lots of posts regarding this procedure.

for some strange reasons I have idling issue every now and then (few days in every couple of months) and then it goes away.

if it's mechanical... the problem would stay I believe.

When I had some terrible erratic idling while back, then I cleaned MAF, TB and IAC. After that problems were gone.

Thanks for the help.

I have cleaned the throttle body with carb clean and have removed the Idle Control Valve, took the top off and cleaned that too. I also replaced the gasket and used the squeezy gasket sealant.

And............

The car has never felt as good. The RPM at idle is around 700-800rpm. No more stalling and vibrations.

Take about a feel good feeling and all for £6

thanks
again
