Default Upper Torque Rod replacement - used a cheap Chinese part.

Noticed a few days ago that the rubber inside the upper torque rod attaching the engine to the firewall bracket was cracked and almost broken totally through. From looking on the internet it seems to be a very common failure.

For replacement I had 2 choices - dealer at A$159 or unknown ebay seller from China for A$45 (GBP25). Given it's not a life safety critical part I went for the China option - the part turned up in just over 10 days, looks OK and only took a few minutes to fit and seems to be working OK - time will tell. I will report back if it fails prematurely.

Given Volvos are made in China it's possible that the part I bought is just the real thing which has somehow "leaked"out of the factory via some unofficial channel.

Default Update on cheap Chinese part

OK, approx 2 and a half years since I fitted the cheap Chinese upper torque rod and I noticed tonight that the rubber has cracked through. The original part lasted about 8 years.

I guess it's just the old story of getting what you pay for. I paid approx 1/3 of the price of the dealer part and got about 1/3 of the lifespan! It's an easy part to remove / refit though so I'll just try another different Chinese cheapie and see if I can do better than 2.5 years ! (I'd never try this approach on stuff that really matters like brakes, steering or engine belts....)
