Default Awd xc90 does it work.

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and Volvo awd.i just purchased a 2005 xc90 to transport my disabled mum around.i have a lifted discovery 2 and mum cant get in.always fancied a xc90 from when I first saw one.
I was told if I could turn the prop the there is a problem.i turned the prop and assume there is a fault.
first question is it ok to drive.
second question is what do I need and how to fix it.
I have tried to search out a how to but still finding my way around the forum.
any help and information will be much appreciated.
sorry for first long post.
Neil.

There is plenty of wet grass around now. Just accelerate hard on there and check whether the rear wheels are kicking some up. You might need to turn the DSTC off for this. Alternatively prop the car on 4 axle stands and check for rear wheel action and the prop shaft.
I thought the 2005 and onwards models had upgraded splined sleeves.

There is plenty of info on the XC90 section of the forum - but yes, if the prop will turn while all four wheels are on the ground, the spline sleeve on the bevel gear is shot.
Best case, it's a new sleeve (still a big job labour wise), worst case, the shaft is also stripped or worn too much and needs replacing.
The shaft is only available as part of a complete bevel gear housing (exchange) - unless you go the second hand route.

Slightly later than 2005 I think they improved the spline sleeve - not 100%

What sort of mileage is the vehicle, and any idea how long it's been 2WD?

Cheers
Ian.

Well I have just finished sorting the angle gear.the spline sleeve was shot and so was the angle gear. as I already had the sleeve I went back to Volvo yesterday and bought a new bevel gear.both parts fitted and all back together today. going to to the rear dif oil and haldex tomorrow. anyone know what oil and how many litres in each please.

For the number of times you'll be doing this (once - unless you intend to keep the car) just get items from Volvo. I'd stand your Haldex oil in a jar after you have removed it and see what settles out - you might want to do a second change early - I know that's that's counter to what I said above.
If its bad i'd consider a Haldex filter change and pump gauze clean up too.
