Question How much for service (incl Auxiliary Belt Kit?

Hi, my XC90 is a 2006 (Registered Mar 2006) D5 Auto. She's due a service and has done 63,000 miles.

My Volvo dealer has quoted £495 inc vat for the service, which will include an 'auxiliary belt kit'. The guy in the service dept says that it would be £265 for a routine service if the auxiliary kit is not required.

If I need a brake fluid change that will be a further £50 plus vat.

He also advised that my timing belt will not need replaced until next year but that cost will be £700 (which I imagine/hope includes the service cost)!

I got another quote from a local garage who say that they will do a full service, include all filters replaced (and include the auxiliary belt) for an all in price of £275

Would really appreciate advice from the seasoned experts on this forum with the following queries:

Is the price quoted by the Volvo dealer reasonable/justified?

As I'm out of warranty, is there any benefit in sticking with the dealer rather than going to my local who is MUCH MUCH cheaper?

At what age/mileage should the auxiliary belt and timing belt be changed (and how can I tell if they actually need changed)?

Really appreciate all advice and responses (as I'm not particularly clued up on car maintenance costs...)

Many Thanks

Hi,

I had a full 6yr/108K service (mine had done 60k) in a 2005 D5. It consisted of: oil, filter, belts kit, auxilliary drive belt, pollen filter, air filter, fuel filter, steering rack adjust and PAS oil, cambelt and a few little extra bits for £461.

This was done by a specialist, Paul Wenlock in Telford, about 2hours from you. He came highly recommended and I'll certainly be going back to him. I'd be tempted to drive down, get a taxi into Telford for a few hours shopping and save yourself hundreds !!!!

HTH,

Darren.

Aux belt Would be changed with cambelt anyway, so its daft to change this year and then change again next year.

My local main dealer changed my 2006 XC90D5 timing belt for £295 in December 2010 (vat was only 15% then) so that would be about £310 now.

This is extremely helpful! Would be fantastic if you could point me to where I could get a copy of a 2006 schedule?

Many thanks

Thanks for that. I'll bear in mind when leaving in and chatting to the garage.

I know that the dealerships tend to charge higher than local garages but I'm not certain that the difference in quotes is/can be totally justified.

We live in austere times, and perhaps the dealers need to reconsider their pricing/charging strategies?

Thanks again.

I would choose to get your service done by whomever/whoever you have the most confidence in. If that is the Volvo dealer, try and haggle them down by obtaining quotes from other garages. Make sure they quote for genuine parts, etc.

My local main dealer usually gets pretty close.

Keep in mind that if you service at the main dealer you now get the free software updates as well as a Year road side assistance, which is worth quite a few pennies...
