Default Creaking clutch pedal

This may seem minor, but it's annoying me and I'd like to sort it.
When I press on my clutch pedal there is a creaking noise that is almost a squeak. I've shot some spray lubricant up the hole into which the clutch pedal disappears and that did seem to improve it for a short time but its back again and no longer responding to lubricant. The pedal is smooth in action but noisy. Is there an easy fix or do I just live with it?

Hi,

To be honest, it's probably just the springs in the clutch itself squeaking a little, or maybe one is broken (There are loads!)

Either that or the thrust bearing squeaking as it slides along the input shaft, when I fitted mine, I used a LITTLE bit of grease (Loads and it'll fling off an end up contaminating the clutch plate.)

Unfortunatley, neither of these are a 5 minute job as the gearbox has to come out to inspect them.

Ah, think I might have the wrong end of the stick?!

If you mean that the pedal itself is squeaking (i.e inside the car) then it's probably a dry pivot pin or something similar.

The lower coweling can be removed to gain access to the pedals, so the mechanisms can be lubricated.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Thanks Steve, yes I meant inside the car.
When you say the lower cowling can be removed, do you mean the plastic cover which the pedals disappear up through?

Yes, but I've never had it off (Ooh... Matron!!) so I couldn't tell you how.

Should be easy enough though.

I had this issue on a V40 and it really drove me mad; foot down (squeak) change gear, foot up (sqeak).
The first attempted cure was a warranty job and the Dealer changed the master cylinder assembly, but this only lasted a thousand miles or so.
I was finally shut up, by liberally spraying the pivot with Wurth Superlube - a ptfe lubricant. It was never really cured though as it came back every few thousand miles and needed another squirt

This might make you worry, but as we're talking about a Volvo, probably not. Years ago I had a Seat Cordoba Vario with a creaky clutch pedal. One day it fell off, yeah, literally, it fell off! The clutch pivot was held in a bracket which was welded to the bulkhead. The weld came away from the bulkhead, that was the creaking sound. I sincerely hope Volvos are built better than that and inwardly, I know they are. I don't know what holds the clutch and maybe it's just in need of a bit of lube in a spot that so far you've missed.

to add a little to the thread had a similar problem some years ago with a vauxhall victor(showing my age now!) constant squeak when pressing the clutch down, lived with it for a while until one day, bang pedal went floor cable snapped-oh dear was very trying driving 15 miles home with no clutch and a right b@stard to change.moral of the story dont put up with it -sort it before catastrophe.

I have a 940 and it does exactly the same! Havent really looked into it though, Ive forgotten its there now to be honest. But that plastic cowel comes off dead easy, three torx screws and its out. Gain access to the amp, steering rod, wiring etc. Quite handy

Is it cable or hydraulic? My cable clutch used to creak, right up until the cable broke.
