Default GUIDE: How to replace the S/V40 heater resistor

Hello,

I'm unable to reply to the Guide thread itself but is the guide and the photos on photobucket linked within it still available please?

There's also a similar one located here:

http://www.volvohowto.com/how-to-rep...o-s40-and-v40/

This guide is only for the phase 2 S/V40s using the 3086 4189 part?

Scandix for example list 3087 5042 for use until MY2000 and for cars without automatic climate control.

Whereas 3086 4189 is listed for:

All models with climate control

All models from 2001 (so phase 2) without air conditioning

All models from 2001 (so phase 2) with air conditioning

Does anyone know if e.g. 3087 5042 is superseded by 3086 4189 for example?

These parts look quite different but from what I can see so far the plug/connector for them is the same.

As per other threads on this forum, the common issue with these 3086 4189 is the transistor which can be replaced. However, is the transistor also replaceable in the earlier 3087 5042?

Apologies if that's answered by the pictures in the Guide post. However all the images just say "sorry, image cannot be displayed" even if I use the direct Photobucket link.

Thanks

Here are the photos.

As far as I know the two resistors are not compatible with each other, but not 100% sure, as I have never tried it myself.

With regards to the 30864189 heater resistor most times it is the transistor that fails and the main symptom is that fan is not working at all. In some occasions water finds its way to the small electronic board, hidden at the base of the resistor, and corrodes it and the main symptom is that the fan is stuck at full speed.

Sorry, don't know if the transistor is replaceable in the earlier 30875042?

Hi

Thanks the reply, the info and the photos.

I'll update this post if I hear anything further about part number interchangeability.
